Prof. Meral Ozsoyoglu's primary work and research interests are in the areas of Database Query Languages, Data Models (nested relations), Query Optimization, Index Structures for high dimensional spaces (sequences, images), and Statistical and Scientific Databases. More recently,she has been working in Bioinformatics, specifically on managing, visualizing and querying genomic pathways, and efficient access methods and on improving similarity search for genome and protein sequences using distance based index structures.

Z. Meral Ozsoyoglu received her PhD in Computer Science from University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada in 1980. Her BSc. degree in Electrical Engineering and MSc. Degree in Computer Science are both from the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. She joined the Department of Computer Engineering and Science at Case Western Reserve University as an Assistant Professor in August 1980. She was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in July 1986, and was promoted to Full Professor in July 1992. From January 2003 to July 2004, Professor Meral Ozsoyoglu has served as the Associate Chair for Computer Science Division of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, and she has been one of the founding members of Case Center for Computational Genomics.

Professor Meral Ozsoyoglu is known for her research in the areas of Database Query Languages, Data Models, Query Optimization, Index Structures for high dimensional spaces, and Statistical Databases. More recently, her research focus is in Bioinformatics and biological data management including managing, visualizing and querying genomic pathways, and efficient access methods and index structures for genomic sequences. She has published over 80 papers in computer science journals including ACM TODS, IEEE TKDE, IEEE TSE, JCSS, and conferences including ACM SIGMOD, ACM PODS, VLDB and ICDE. She has been the program chair of international conferences, IEEE ICDE 2004, ACM PODS'97, SSDBM'99 and ACM SIGMOD vice chair 1997-2001, associate editor of IEEE TKDE journal 1999-2002. She is currently an associate editor of ACM TODS, WWW journal, and IEEE DE Bulletin. Professor Ozsoyoglu is a recipient of a recipient of several awards including IBM Faculty Award, NSF Faculty Award for Women, and Distinguished Alumni Award from University of Alberta.
